Assemble! - Fighting Game Achetype Roster - The Psycho

This is Assemble, where we look at several different characters across multiple series to form a perfect team-up. Whatever the case may be, whether it’s a fighting game roster or an RPG adventuring party, we’ll find the best team for the job. In a change of style from the more long-form articles featured here, these articles will be shorter entries, focusing on one or two characters each, and spread out over time until the complete roster is formed.

What would a fighting game be without a roster of several different, powerful, and engaging characters? In this batch of articles for Assemble, we will be assembling a fighting game roster using characters from several different fighting games based on different character archetypes.

The picks will be based on where the characters fit in terms of game mechanics and their place in the story and world of the game. Only characters that originated in fighting games will be observed here. That means no guest characters, no licensed fighting games (unless their roster includes original characters), and no crossover titles. Finally, I’ll only be discussing games or characters that I am at least somewhat familiar with. While this means I won’t discuss all the fighting games out there, there should be at least some variety from just the major titles.

THE PSYCHO

A frequent appearance in fighting game casts, the Psycho is, as the name would imply, a character whose mental state is far from stable. It doesn’t matter how the character came into their psychosis, but they behave in a way that would put a lot of normal people off. They may be prone to weird or random behaviors, saying non-sensical things, or, fitting for a fighting game, they may have a love for fighting and combat that goes a little too far. While others fight because they have to for some means to an end (or simply because they’re bored), this character gets a psychological high from the act of inflicting harm or spilling blood.

Our choice for the Psycho is…

Carmine from Under Night In-Birth

Carmine was already a bit unhinged before his powers emerged, though in more of a troublemaking punk kind of way. Once they did emerge however, he went off the deep end completely. He is obsessed with violence and is a cruel and sadistic individual, drunk on his own power. His powers help sell the image of insanity as he is able to control his own blood, forming different attacks with it and even altering his appearance by dying parts of his body red with his blood. It is implied that he is not completely insane though, as he is still aware of the events happening around him and he will halt his assault if certain conditions are met. He is also implied to have a low opinion of himself, referring to himself as trash on different occasions and stating that he would care if he died on top of a pile of trash, which may hint at depression on top of his violent behavior.

Next level high-school punk.

For being a ferocious fighter exhibiting both obsessive violent tendencies and hints of depression, we now add Carmine to the roster.

Honorable Mention: Faust from Guilty Gear

Faust is easily one of the weirdest characters in the Guilty Gear roster. From his strange moves to his fighting stance, he stands out among the cast of already-eye-catching characters as being the odd one. However, it is implied that through all the weirdness, he is actually sane. Before becoming Faust, he appeared in the series’ first entry as Dr. Baldhead, a medical physician turned violent murderer. After the events of the first game, he regained his sanity and sought to atone for his crimes under a new identity. Also, despite all his crazy in-game moves, outside of battle, he behaves like a normal doctor.

So, he’s not insane, just weird.
