Assemble! - Custom Shooter Squad - The Space Marine

Welcome to Assemble!
Here, we'll look at several different characters across multiple series to see who would form a perfect team for a certain genre. From fighting game rosters to RPG adventuring parties, different types of characters tend to show up frequently. What we'll do here is look at those archetypes to see what character is the best fit for that slot, and in the end, we’ll have the best team for the job. These articles will also be shorter entries, compared to some of the more long-form articles here, focusing on one or two characters at a time.

Despite a perception of a lot of these titles as generic war games, some shooters allow players to dive into an engaging story in a captivating world, taking the role of interesting characters with varied weapons, abilities, personalities, and motivations, especially with the popularity of hero shooters like Team Fortress 2, Overwatch, and Paladins. In this series of Assemble articles, we will be assembling a hero shooter roster using characters from several different shooters, based on different character archetypes.

The picks will be based on the different themes and tones of the characters and the worlds they inhabit as well as the roles they fill on a team or the kinds of weapons they use. Only characters that originated from video games, shooters particularly, will be observed here. Both first and third-person shooters will count and so will first and third-person action games if their main method of combating enemies is gunplay. Finally, I’ll only be discussing games and characters that I am at least somewhat familiar with. While this means I won’t discuss every shooter in existence, there should still be a good amount of variety with the series explored.

THE SPACE MARINE

The last of our setting-based archetypes is the Space Marine, named so because they are mainly used in futuristic sci-fi settings, commonly another planet or outer space. They typically wear bulky suits of technologically advanced armor, may or may not be less affected by gravity than those in shooters set on Earth, and their weapons tend to include at least a few laser guns. They are typically an elite soldier fighting some alien threat to their home planet and background info about the person behind the armor tends to be scarce, the narrative of their games focusing less on who they were and more on what they are doing now.

Our pick for the Space Marine is…

Master Chief from Halo.

Master Chief is a genetically enhanced super-soldier for the UNSC Army, trained from an early age to fight. While he only shows hints of a personality, never showing his face since he is always in his armor, rarely ever speaking, and mostly referred to by his rank than any given name, his sense of duty comes through clearly. While he was originally taken from his family to serve as a soldier in the UNSC, he has taken to his new role in life with ease, fighting off interstellar threats to humanity like the Covenant and the Flood. He faces incredible odds and large numbers of enemy soldiers, but ultimately, manages to come out on top. His weapons are just as iconic as the man wielding them as well, as Halo weapons like the Pistol, Battle Rifle, Needler, and Energy Sword have become iconic parts of his arsenal and form part of his Space marine image.

For being an iconic image that has inspired various other characters afterwards, we now add Master Chief to our roster.
