Despite a perception of a lot of these titles as generic war
games, some shooters allow players to dive into an engaging story in a
captivating world, taking the role of interesting characters with varied
weapons, abilities, personalities, and motivations, especially with the
popularity of hero shooters like Team Fortress 2, Overwatch, and Paladins. In
this series of Assemble articles, we will be assembling a hero shooter roster
using characters from several different shooters, based on different character
archetypes.
The picks will be based on the different themes and tones of
the characters and the worlds they inhabit as well as the roles they fill on a
team or the kinds of weapons they use. Only characters that originated from
video games, shooters particularly, will be observed here. Both first and
third-person shooters will count and so will first and third-person action
games if their main method of combating enemies is gunplay. Finally, I’ll only
be discussing games and characters that I am at least somewhat familiar with.
While this means I won’t discuss every shooter in existence, there should still
be a good amount of variety with the series explored.
THE AIR SUPPORT
Shooting enemies is hard enough when they’re on the ground
but adding in soldiers that can fly adds a whole new level of complexity. Not
to be confused with an actual support class, The Air Support is a character
that can use abilities that give them vertical mobility; anything from an
enhanced jumping mechanic to literal flight. They are often armed with a rocket
launcher for their primary weapon, which lets them rain explosive damage from
above to control the battlefield. This character is often portrayed as a member
of an army or a mercenary group, battling for the greater good, or at least
what they think is the greater good.
Our pick for the Air Support is…
Benedict from Battleborn.
The first factor in his image is obviously his look. He’s a
bird-like alien being. According to Battleborn’s lore, he was able to fly
freely until one of his wings was injured in a fight protecting his homeworld,
but he is still capable of flight using an artificial wing (though his flight
in-game is limited for game balance reasons). Apart from his looks and his
backstory though, his move-set also showcases how well he fits this role. His
abilities let him take off into the air and glide around while firing rockets
from his launcher down on enemies. His arsenal also includes homing rockets and
his Ultimate is a remote-controlled rocket that deals massive damage upon
detonation.
This bird bombs you with actual bombs.
For fitting the image of his role so well, from his look to
his gear, we now add Benedict to our roster.
