Assemble! - Fighting Game Archetype Roster - The Swift Striker

This is Assemble, where we look at several different characters across multiple series to form a perfect team-up. Whatever the case may be, whether it’s a fighting game roster or an RPG adventuring party, we’ll find the best team for the job. In a change of style from the more long-form articles featured here, these articles will be shorter entries, focusing on one or two characters each, and spread out over time until the complete roster is formed.

What would a fighting game be without a roster of several different, powerful, and engaging characters? In this batch of articles for Assemble, we will be assembling a fighting game roster using characters from several different fighting games based on different character archetypes. The picks will be based on where the characters fit in terms of game mechanics and their place in the story and world of the game. Only characters that originated in fighting games will be observed here. That means no guest characters, no licensed fighting games (unless their roster includes original characters), and no crossover titles. Finally, I’ll only be discussing games or characters that I am at least somewhat familiar with. While this means I won’t discuss all the fighting games out there, there should be at least some variety from just the major titles.

THE SWIFT STRIKER

Switching gears from story tropes to gameplay tropes, the Swift Striker is a fast and light character, who may not deal a lot of damage with one individual strike, but instead focuses on stringing together several strikes, which can lead to brutal offensive combos when used effectively. While several of these characters in fighting games are portrayed as ninja, which helps to sell the image of a fast and agile character, this character slot is meant to embody a fast but weak fighter that relies more on their speed, agility, and quick strikes to win a fight, rather than brute strength.
Our choice for the Swift Striker is…

Ayame from Power Stone.
One of the eight main characters of the Capcom 3D fighting game Power Stone, Ayame is a 19th century ninja traveling the world seeking the Power Stone, a magical gemstone rumored to make any wish come true. With the fights being set in a 3D arena, all of the characters can interact with the environment in various ways, and Ayame is no exception. She can jump and flip over objects, climb up poles and along ceilings, and throw, push, or wield objects around her as weapons. Within a match, Ayame is a fast and agile character, is one of the few characters that can double jump, and having combos with attacks that aren’t strong but are plentiful. This trend continues when she undergoes her Power Change.

Kirby should've taught you something about folks in pink.

In a match in Power Stone, three different colored gems (the Power Stones) will appear and if a character collects all three, they will enter a super form and can use a set of new powerful attacks. In Ayame’s Power Change form (seen above), she can use a giant shuriken that appears on her back for strong and quick attacks as it splits into more shuriken after being thrown. She can also briefly disappear and reappear and put together a combo of fast and powerful hits for a potentially round-ending super move.

For being able to move quickly, hit efficiently, and use the environment to her advantage, we now add Ayame to our roster.

Honorable Mention: Jon Talbain (Darkstalkers)

Though he didn't exactly make this slot for our hypothetical roster, Jon Talbain from Darkstalkers deserves at least a little bit of attention. In the roster of horror-inspired monsters that is this series, this kung-fu trained werewolf is able to move and strike quickly and has some powerful attacks to his name. Just him being a werewolf implies that he is stronger and faster than a human, though this isn't exactly obvious in actual gameplay, and one of his special moves lets him rocket himself at his opponent.

Hopefully, he and Ayame get another game to show just how swift they can strike.
