Assemble! - Horror Victim Archetypes - The Beauty

This is Assemble, where we look at several different characters across multiple series to form a perfect team-up. Whatever the case may be, whether it’s a fighting game roster or an RPG adventuring party, we’ll find the best team for the job. In a change of style from the more long-form articles featured here, these articles will be shorter entries, focusing on one or two characters each, and spread out over time until the complete roster is formed.

When talking about horror, the villains, monsters, and killers are often the first things that come to people’s minds. The people they hunt are often an afterthought, but these characters show that not all survivors are that easy to kill. The right group with the right people can make things very difficult for the killer. Here, we’ll be looking at that can represent different archetypes of horror movie characters, to build a strong squad of survivors.

THE BEAUTY

Often referred to by... less friendly terms, The Beauty, named for her superficial good looks, is one of the most frequent first victims of horror movies. Frequently portrayed as sexually promiscuous, selfish, and mean to others, contrasting her fresh appearance with a rotten personality, she is often targeted by the killer shortly after having sex with one of the other characters in the movie, usually an athletic pretty boy. If she is a high school student, she is also one of the most popular girls in school, despite her rotten demeanor. For this entry however, we’ll look at someone who fits the role but manages to survive to the end of the story, possibly earning some character development along the way.

Our pick for The Beauty is…

Theresa “Tree” Gelbman from Happy Death Day

When she starts off the movie, Tree is a typical mean girl. She's a member of her college’s sorority, she tries dating and sleeping with several different males, and there are hints thrown around that she has wronged a lot of people. However, due to events initially unknown to her, she is forced to relive the same day repeatedly, which happens to be both her birthday and the day she is killed by a mask-wearing psycho. Over the course of her several lives, she not only learns how to be a better person, but also learns how to survive dangerous situations and how to handle herself when chased by a killer. By the end of the movie, she has the knowledge and the determination to make it through to the end.

For learning how to survive in a dangerous and horrific situation and growing as a person beyond her original, off-putting personality, we now add Tree Gelbman to the roster.
